Nine Coldham Hall boats took part in the
YSC/CHSC Challenge Cup, namely Anna, Marigold and Golden Moon sailing for YSC
and Brigand, Moonlark, Stratus, Bessie Bell, Grayling and May sailing for CHSC
Before the race started, May tried to
engulf the sailing club with black smoke when her engine decided to self
destruct. With the excitement over,
there were two starts, which is the first time for as long as anybody can
remember. At the front of the fleet,
Brigand and May proceeded to play cat and mouse throughout the race, with Anna,
who had Joe Farrow crewing for the Branscombes, chasing from behind.
The long course just short of Langley Wood was sailed and with a good
southerly wind, made it a mainly reaching course with a couple of short tacks.
Brigand took line honours for the fast
fleet, with Golden Moon coming in first for the slow fleet.
After the results were sorted, Golden Moon took first overall for the YSC.
After CHSC had taken their discards, teams were equal on eleven points
each; the trophy therefore going to YSC
Duncan Ellis in Golden Moon also took
the Bessie Bell trophy and the polypin of beer, kindly donated by Nick Ebbage,
for the first CHSC member
