Betty Charlton, 1931-2021 New Page 1

Betty Charlton of Neatishead died peacefully at the Priscilla Bacon Lodge on 3rd November 2021. Her funeral was held at St Faiths Crematorium on 17th November and attended by around 100 people, most of whom retired afterwards to the Black Swan at St Faiths.

She is survived by husband Pete and son Joe.

Betty was born in Bungay, Suffolk on 16th June 1931, the second oldest of five children. She attended Bungay area school where she met future husband Peter, both at 11 years old. On leaving school she trained as a nurse at the Royal Hospital Guildford before transferring to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

Subsequent to nursing, Betty also taught for a number of years at Catton Hall School Norwich, from where she retired in 1993.

She married Peter in 1952 and they had two children, Jane and Joe. Jane sadly died in 1988. Joe eventually re-located to Greece where he opened a successful boatyard business.

Betty sailed for a number of years in a variety of boats with husband Pete and started racing in Henrietta with the Yare Sailing Club before joining in 2001. Betty became a great advocate of the YSC, becoming a committee member and greatly supporting club events. Even after parting with Henrietta in 2012, Betty and Pete continued to support the club with their motor cruiser Damsel, where she became renowned for her on-board hospitality.

In addition to her love of sailing, she also enjoyed walking and playing badminton until well into her eighties.  She enjoyed travelling, regularly journeying solo to visit son Joe in Greece and visiting friends in France. She was an accomplished artist and regularly exhibited in local art exhibitions. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.
